It is a 20.8km course from the Odawara relay station to the outbound goal of Lake Ashi parking lot, and it is a special uphill section not found in the Izumo Ekiden and the All Japan University Ekiden. In the 5th ward, the so-called race moves to widen or narrow the time difference. Athletes who achieve results on this mountain are called "mountain gods." In 2015, Daichi Kamino ran fast in the 5th ward and contributed to Seigaku University's victory in the Hakone Ekiden, becoming the 3rd Yama no Kami. The 5th ward has been shortened since Kamino's era to 20.8 kilometers (section record: Hayato Miyashita, Toyo University, 1 hour 10 minutes 25 seconds), but the climb up to the highest point at an altitude of 874m has not changed. “At first, when I looked at the clock (km), it was 2 minutes and 48 seconds. I was thinking that even if I lost, I would still have this time, but Director Hara told me, 'It's proof that I'm in good shape and my movements are good, so let's keep going.'"
