Huawei, the largest telecommunications equipment company in China, held an annual strategy briefing for analysts on April 12. Mr. Xu Zhijun, who took office as Chairman of the Board of Directors (corresponding to the chairman) for half a year from April, announced Huawei's "Five Major Strategies" in 2021 at the keynote speech. He talked about its significance as follows.

"In 2019 and 2020, all the time was spent overcoming the impact of US government sanctions and couldn't afford to ponder the future. Looking back on that experience, we have the hope of surviving. But it turns out that more effort is needed to survive better. "

In addition, Mr. Xu said, "We cannot make a corporate strategy based on assumptions and illusions," and the five major strategies are for Huawei to survive and grow its business under the premise that US sanctions will continue for a long time. He emphasized that it was a strategy.

The first of the five major strategies is to optimize the business portfolio and increase the resilience of the business (against contingencies). In particular, it emphasizes strengthening software development capabilities, and specifically focuses on cloud computing and autonomous driving software.

"I believe I can survive"

The second strategy is to fully expand the added value of 5G (5th generation mobile communication) and step up to 5.5G. Accelerate the transition of telecommunications users from 4G to 5G, and enhance 5G solutions for corporations. Furthermore, we will promote the creation of 5.5G standards through collaboration with industry companies.

The third strategy is to expand the consumer business in five areas: smart homes, smart offices, smart travel, sports & health, and audio-visual entertainment to offset the decline in smartphone sales (due to sanctions).

The fourth strategy is to realize a low-carbon society by reducing energy consumption. Huawei will support and reduce the energy consumption of mobile communication base stations and data centers of customers, telecommunications carriers.

And finally, the fifth is to build a system to withstand US sanctions by continuing efforts to improve the supply chain. "If you do it, Huawei will survive without any problems. I believe we can do it." Mr. Xu said so.
