Mozilla has announced that it will end the project of Firefox Reality, a web browser for VR that has been recommended for development since 2018. The project assets will be carried over to a browser that will soon release a beta version called "Wolvic" developed by Spanish company Igalia.
Firefox Reality was developed to meet even more niche demand in niche markets, so it received little business attention (and also developed the HoloLens 2 version). However, the retirement of "Metaverse", which started to become more active around last year, just before sunrise seems to be a little more patience.
However, the share of Firefox browser has been decreasing slightly in recent years, and it is reported that the share of PC desktop browser, which was about 32% in 2010, is about 9% by the middle of 2021.
In 2020, Mozilla laid off 1/4 of all employees in the name of financial strengthening to improve profitability by streamlining overall. Perhaps because of that effect, paid services such as Mozilla VPN, Pocket, and Firefox Relay, an email forwarding service, are doing well, and this year's revenue is expected to increase.
The Wolvic browser will be released in beta next week for Oculus (Meta) and Huawei VR Glass, and will also support VR platforms such as HTC Vive Focus, Lynx, and Pico Neo. Supports WebXR content, supports web browsing for VR and input / playback of 360-degree video. It is equipped with functions such as privacy mode, voice search, movie mode, and tab resizing.
